Dr. G.S. Davar post-graduated
from Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore
securing distinction and first position as well as Institute's
Gold Medal i.e. Dr. G.L. Gold Medal in 1961 at the hands of
Padmshri Dr. V. Subrahmanyam --- an internationally renowned
Babcock Hart Award winner Director of the Institute who offered
him a fellowship for doctoral studies.
He served as H.O.D. department
of Food Technology at New Delhi in the Institute of Applied
Nutrition in pusa campus established by the Ministry of Food
& Agriculture of the GOI and FAO of UNO under Mr. Belfielsmith
of FAO.
Through an All India Open Competition
he was awarded a scholarship i.e. Carl Duisburg Scholarship
for persuing advanced studies in West-Germany at Karlsruhe
under Herr Professor Dr. Kuprianoff where his doctoral work
was carried out. Simultaneously he was invited to USA under
a senior fellowship at Cornell University in 1965 by Prof.
Dr. Robert C. Baker which he did not avail due to the priority
he attached to his presence in India to attend to his ailing
father who desperately needed him.
Later on in 1975 he was invited
to present his work at the SOS "Science of Survival"
Conference held in Washington.
In 1977 he was selected &
invited by the International Institute of Protein Food Technology,
Santa Monica, U.S.A. where he worked on Low Cost High Nutrition
& visited Universities of Los Angeles, Prudue, Indiana
& Philadelphia and also become a fellow of the Food Technologists
Association, U.S.A.
In India his work has been devoted
to the development of hydrocolloids based formulations for
application in the Food Industry as Import substitutes of
Sodium Alginate, Carrageenans, Locus Bean Gum, Gum Tragacanth
for their use as quality improvers in the (i) Dairy Industries
(ii) Bakery products (iii) Sauces & Gravies & (iv)
Extruded products.
He also developed formulations
for the paper industry to provide strength, finish and overall
quality improvement of paper which found use with leading
paper mills like Hindustan Paper Corporation, Pondicherry
Paper Mills, Mandya Paper Mill etc.
For the leather industry he developed
Paste-Drying Agent as substitute of imported Gum Tracacanth
which found immediate approval & acceptance by Central
Leather Research Institute, Madras as well as the well reputed
Bata India & Gordon Woodroffe of Madras - ( the two leading
most leather processing units in India).
He also developed additives for
the pharmaceutical industry which found approval from leading
manufacturers like M/s Raptakos Brett for use as tablet binder
and as Aluminium Hydroxide gel stabilizer.
All his formulations bear either
the prefix "Ico" or the suffix "Podric"
which were registered.
In 1995 he was awarded "Udyog
Ratna" award at the hands of Shri Vasant Sathe at Delhi.
Recently he was invited by the
"TIMES" group as an author for their Food Processing
related Journal being brought out as Economic Times Presentation.
"TIMES" Food Processing Journal is meant to show-case
the post-globalization State-of-the-art in respect of food
laws, quality control, quality assurance and the ways &
means of utilizing abundant opportunities in the field of
food processing that exist in India.
One of his articles written in
German language (along with his colleague Dr. W. Spiess) after
completing German language course before beginning his work
with Herr Prof. Dr. Kuprianoff has also been enclosed in this
note.
Social & humanitarian
service effort
Lions Clubs International is
the largest voluntary humanitarian service organization in
the world that plays an effective role in the U.N.O. also.
In 1986 Dr. G.S. Davar was unanimously elected as District
Governor Lions Clubs International with 86 Lions Clubs under
his charge spread over M.P. and Rajasthan to be serviced in
the District 323 E1. He acquired this position on the basis
of his 10 years of humanitarian service effort under LCI banner.
One of his outstanding contributions
to Gwalior in particular has been the success of a project
designed and sponsored by him as District Governor for procuring
well equipped cancer detection vans through LCIF at the cost
of over Rs. 11,00,000.00 (Eleven Lacs) for the early detection
of cancer in rural areas of M.P. & Rajasthan by the Cancer
Hospital, Gwalior.
He also served as President Gwalior
Jaycees. He is actively associated with the National Society
for the prevention of Blindness M.P. chapter also.
